Einstein Telescope Education Centre: Film – Demo – Workshops

The Einstein Telescope will be a large observatory for detecting gravitational waves. One of the potential sites for the construction of this telescope is South Limburg (NL).

If the Einstein Telescope is built in South Limburg, it will have a major, positive impact on the region, as well as on the Netherlands as a whole. Scientists and engineers are already working on the development of this gigantic telescope. They are doing this at the ETpathfinder in Maastricht, amongst other places.

A major scientific project is fascinating. Not only for the people working on it, but also for school pupils and other interested parties. As the leading science museum in the southern Netherlands, Discovery Museum aims, through the Einstein Telescope Education Centre (ETEC), to show pupils that the research required for the Einstein Telescope is not something ‘far removed from their everyday lives’. Rather, much of the physics they learn at secondary school finds practical application in this challenging research.

ETEC aims to introduce pupils to the Einstein Telescope and let them work as researchers themselves. Pupils experience what it is like to solve technical problems as a team, using physics as a basis. For one day, they follow in the footsteps of scientists.

ETEC also stimulates pupils’ curiosity and inspires their enthusiasm for science and technology. As a result, they may well choose a career in science and technology themselves in the future. And perhaps they will become the new researchers at the Einstein Telescope…

Who is it for?

The Einstein Telescope Education Centre is a programme for secondary schools and focuses primarily on students of general education in their final year and students of pre-university education close to graduation. Groups of students can take part in a day-long programme together with their teachers. ETEC can accommodate one group (with a maximum of 40 students) on a day-to-day basis.
