Deksel behorend bij dekselkom, Petrus Regout & Co., 1859
Voor de aardewerkfabriek van Petrus Regout in Maastricht was de exportmarkt heel belangrijk. Maastrichts aardewerk werd over de hele wereld verkocht. Vooral Zuidoost-Azië vormde een groot afzetgebied. In 1859 probeerde Regout ook de Japanse markt te bereiken. Regout liet daarom onderzoek doen naar de smaak van de Japanse klanten. De donburi rijstkommen met deksel die Regout in zijn fabriek liet vervaardigen, kwamen in vorm en maat helemaal overeen met de exemplaren die de Japanners gewend waren.
